For the second consecutive fight, Dan Henderson found himself on the wrong end of a split decision. This time against Rashad Evans at UFC 161. In round one both fighters were cautiously feeling the other out until Henderson stunned Evans with a stiff left jab which knocked Evans to the mat. Evans tried to regain his footing but was met with a right uppercut which sent him to the mat again. Henderson followed with a flurry of punches which had Evans hurt, but Evans was able to get back to his feet and able to defend until the end of the first round. After the first round Evans’ corner could be heard telling their fighter “you gotta take him down” most likely in response to the damage he took on the feet.

The second round was very hard to judge with both fighters landing strikes. Evans was able to land a brief takedown at the start of the second round, while Henderson was landing with a more diverse striking attack landing knees, elbows and punches. At the close of the round both fighters looked winded with Evans’ face showing signs of damage with blood coming from his right eye.

In the third round Henderson was the more visibly tired of the two, while Evans seemed to pick up the pace. Evans clearly did his best work of the night in the third round. At the close of the third round everyone watching knew this would be close and that the outcome would be determined by the subjective opinions of the judges especially for the second round. As the scores were being read it was no surprise that this was going to be a split decision. Evans was announced the winner and Henderson once again standing on the losing end of a split decision. After the fight Henderson stated that he should have done more to seal the victory and shouldn’t have left it in the hands of the judges.

Clinch Gear athlete Marcus “Bad Intentions” Edwards of Factory X recently won the biggest fight of his young career against The Ultimate Fighter 15 cast member Dakota Cochrane at DISORDERLY CONDUCT 19. Cochrane came into the fight with a professional record of 14-3 against Edwards’ 3-1 professional record. A late replacement, Edwards was sure not to let the opportunity slip through his hands. The fight started off with Edwards pushing the pace. Looking to be first, Edwards began pumping his jab while looking for opportunities to land combinations. Edwards landed a sharp right hand which dazed Cochrane. As Cochrane hit the mat, Edwards followed his opponent down and looked for dominant position. A scramble ensued and Edwards established control. From there Edwards was able to secure the back of his opponent and sink in the fight ending Rear Naked Choke. With the win Edwards improves his professional record to 4-1 (11-0 amateur record) and notches the highest profile win of his young career. The up and coming Edwards is sure to have opened some eyes at the UFC and looks to be just a couple of wins away from a call to the big show. Congratulations Marcus!
The Front Range CrossFit Team

This year’s CrossFit South West Regionals showcased the tremendous growth this sport has had in a very short time. With all of the top athletes now being professional CrossFitters, owning their own gym or being paid to compete, the effect it has on the level of athlete is dramatic. At one point certain movements would slow a certain type of competitor down, but today’s CrossFit athletes can compete at a very high level in all movements.

Clinch Gear was on site and sponsored three teams at the South West Regionals: Front Range CrossFit, Front Range CrossFit Too (2nd team) and CrossFit Unbroken. The Front Range CrossFit teams have been a staple in team competition for years and were favored to podium (finish 1st – 3rd) in this year’s Regionals while facing stiff competition from another perenial powerhouse in Utah’s Hack’s Pack UTE and the UTE All-Stars (2nd team). CrossFit Unbroken saw Clinch Gear athlete Kevin Ogar, normally an individual regionals competitor, join the team competition this year.

As the first day of the three day event came to a close, it was evident that Hack’s Pack UTE and Front Range CrossFit were the teams to beat with UTE finishing 1st and FRCF finishing 2nd overall. On day two of the event CrossFit Unbroken had a breakthrough performance finishing 6th in event five and moving their team up the leaderboard from 20th to 15th overall. On day three Hack’s Pack UTE solidified its 1st place position while Front Range CrossFit cemented their 2nd place position in the field. The Front Range CrossFit Too team came on strong in the final event finishing 7th to move their way up the leaderboard.

The Final results from of the South West Regional team competition are:
1st – Hack’s Pack UTE
2nd – Front Range CrossFit
3rd – UTE All-Stars
16th – CrossFit Unbroken
19th – Front Range CrossFit Too

With their 2nd place finish, Front Range CrossFit has earned its way to the world championships of CrossFit, the CrossFit Games in July. Clinch Gear would like to send its congratulations to all athletes who competed. See photos from the event below:

Clinch Gear athlete Jesse “JT Money” Taylor defended his Cage Warriors Middleweight title against the dangerous knockout artist John Phillips at Cage Warriors Fighting Championships 54. Taylor, known for his wrestling prowess, used a well timed takedown to avoid the dangerous hands of Phillips and worked from guard to mount eventually finishing a scramble with a fight ending guillotine choke. With the win Taylor finds himself on a six fight win streak including a win over UFC veteran Kendall Grove. This win streak combined with two title defenses should put Taylor on the cusp of being called back up to the UFC. Congratulations to Jesse Taylor on the title defense!

Clinch Gear CrossFit athlete Chris “Dozer” Dozois finishes in 1st place overall in the Southwest Region at the 2013 CrossFit Open. At age 41, Dozois entered the CrossFit Open hoping to qualify for the Southwest Regionals in the new 40-44 Master’s Division or place high enough to help his team, Front Range CrossFit (FRCF), qualify for regionals. What ensued was a dominant display of fitness as Dozois beat out perennial CrossFit Games competitors Matt Chan, Chris Spealler and Patrick Burke in the overall division competing with men almost half his age. With a spot at the regionals secured Dozois now has the decision of which division to compete in: Overall, Master’s 40-44 or Team. Congratulations to Chris for his 1st place finish!
